Well to put up words on this, first of all I have to write about the whole Experience I had on the concept of “LIGHTLESS AND DARKLESS” effect of Ar. Louis I Khan and how it drifted me into my theories of the coexistence of similar effects which support each other to make beautiful spaces in this amazing world.

When I first heard about this “LIGHTLESS AND DARKLESS” effect, I never used to understand this theory was or what it meant. People used to say it’s when the right amount of light hits the right substance at the right time and blah blah blah !!! Well listening to all that just made me too confused !! It kept me wondering and that urge to know started burning deep inside. This was during my college days and maybe it was the natures calling, me and a few of my friends got a chance to go on a road trip from Kochi to Ahmedabad to visit Ar. Louis I khan’s “IIM changed our perspective towards everything. How vibrant was our Country !! Travel makes a lot of twists and turns in your life you know!

So coming back to our stuff !

When I reached IIM, this search of “LL&DL" was lost and I just got carried away in the Magical spaces he had created. I got chills being at every nook and corner. The scale that he played with just wrapped me in its comfort and made me realize how small I was for the first time ever!! I can never forget the chills I got when i was there. Once I left the premises of IIM, I realized that I have not figured what LL&DL was but what ever that was, I had experienced that effect when I was walking the great halls of the IIM. We returned back home soon after, still not completely knowing what I was searching for.

So one day back in town while i was sipping a chai on the street at night with my fellow archi’s, I suddenly got lost in the beauty of a building, a very normal building, a building that I see every day. I first started to wonder why I never noticed this particular building, then I realized that there was nothing so special about this one. Well I even figured it out that according to my taste the building was an ugly one, then why was it so that I felt it as one of the most beautiful buildings there. Why did I get so lost in its beauty ? Was it really beautiful?

Now let me ask you something, What do you call Moon light? Do you call it “light" or “Darkness”? Is it both or is it neither??

Well I figured it out !! this was nature’s very own “LL&DL effect". I was so happy to have figured it out ! The building was literally glowing in the moon light !! And it was so beautiful. Figuring this out, I felt that my search was complete and I moved on! But one sunny day when I was in a woods that was right next to my home during broad daylight, maybe because of the shade that was falling on my skin from the woods, I felt this same effect. Well maybe not the same effect, but the same chills that I got when I was in IIM and when I saw the building in moon light. This made me start to wonder was it just the light and shadow that was playing there?? Or was I missing something ?? Something that was really vital?

I closed my eyes for a while not knowing what I was doing. This woods had a main connecting road in one of its sides through which we enter. Because of this road the first thing you start to hear is the traffic, and having my eyes closed it was loud. I kept my eyes shut for some more time just because the chills that I got was wonderful. But suddenly I started to hear the birds chirping ! And slowly slowly I started to hear more beautiful sounds like the breeze and the leaves and the crickets. Slowly slowly these sounds started to become loud and the traffic noise was no more !! I had completely forgotten my surroundings and was lost in this effect. It was fun for me and I tried to find more distant sounds hidden and found that there was a stream that was flowing in a distance. After some time I started to understand that this whole parts of voices and sounds are being played in a rhythm that was repeating its patterns and kept on improvising the patters on time to time. Well I don’t know if I said it right, but it was one beautiful melody that I have never heard before in my life !!! It was so beautiful that I forgot to open my eyes for a long time. I started to call this effect the “NATURAL MELODY”

That was when I understood that it was not just LL&DL alone that was making these spaces so beautiful, it was the coexistence of LL&DL with THE NATURAL MELODY that was making these spaces that beautiful. While branding them beautiful it doesn’t mean that it’s just for the eye, when these both coexist the whole experience of the space becomes beautiful.

After that, understanding the beauty of this, I wanted to experience this effect on a much more pure space, somewhere it has not been contaminated by us, someplace where I could experience this by being more closer to Mother Nature. First place that came into my mind was the CARDAMOM forests of Mangalam -Kallar. Off I went to one of my cousins plantations there and went on a trek alone. I walked deep into the property and found my perfect sweet spot. It was a stream that was ending on a trees huge root, making it a deep still water body. It’s still one of my favorite spots ever. The place felt so perfect. I sat down on a rock and was just seeing the stream. But to my surprise this time the whole experience was so different. It was an experience I never had felt before. I dint have to close my eyes this time. The trees were too tall making me so tiny!, the light was entering in the perfect amount into the shades of these humongous tree spreads. The birds were chirping and the breeze was making its magical music pampering the leaves. It was a perfect coexistence of the LL&DL with the NATURAL MELODY. I dint even have to close my eyes this time to hear Mother Nature play it’s wonderful music. It was so beautiful.

But then why was it so different this time ?? Why was it so perfect ? Yes there was no disturbances. Yes it was all pure !! But there was definitely something more to it. Then I closed my eyes and started to feel what it was that was making it so special. The melody was enhanced this time. The way she become louder when you listen to her alone is just too beautiful!! How did I not listen to her before. Such sweet symphony. The most unique composition!. While enjoying this I started to realize that the soft mist of Munnar breeze was also pampering my skin, the chills I had was enhanced in this space because of the beautiful climate there. That’s when I realized it was not just LL&DL with THE NATURAL MELODY, the coexistence of the effects were not complete unless it satisfies all the 5 senses.

By this time I had already met with the "SENSE OF TOUCH" that was coexisting with others in that space who was touching me softly through her breeze.

Well now that I figured it out, I wanted to know what role the other 2 senses had on creating the perfect space !! I closed my eyes and started to search for more, this time trying to focus on the odour around me. It’s quiet interesting how nature shows off her beauty when you actually give time for her!! The whole space was filled with different and interesting smell. I never knew these flowers we see had so strong smell. The leaves to the ripe cardamom to the berries, everyone of them contributed. But this unnoticed silent one dint come alone, she came along with her friend who became like the cherry on the ice cream making the experience inexpressible, she was “taste”!. I started to call them both “THE TASTEFUL ODOUR”.

This is when I realized that any space to reach its fullness of experience there should be a coexistence of these 4 effects supporting each other.

This theory of LIGHTLESS & DARKLESS EFFECT with the NATURAL MELODY Coexisting with the SENSE OF TOUCH and the TASTEFUL ODOUR started stirring all concepts I had about architecture. Not only architecture but on everything I do.

Writing about all this I had actually drifted away with a lot of beautiful memories.

When I started CURVED DIMENSION I started it with a dream, a dream that was guided with this theory of coexistence. I believed that anything, to reach its fullness has to coexist with something, just like the perfect space. We realized that architecture alone never existed, or it never came to its fullest alone. We believed that we were part of this concept of “art meets architecture”. Our practice started inviting our fellow artists, musicians, cartoonist, and all who were vibrant in the field of ART and started to discuss our concepts, they started to share their art with us and without us all knowing this coexistence of all artists started making our lives and our ART beautiful.

Today we at CURVED DIMENSION dream of a space, where all artists can come together to share the ART inside them. And that’s when we would say-

“WHEN ART MEETS ARTISTS”
